Strong growth in GST revenue signals improving economic activity; March collections mark second-highest monthly figure ever

India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections rose by a healthy 8.2% year-on-year to reach a robust ₹1.78 lakh crore in March 2026, the Finance Ministry announced on Wednesday.

This marks the second-highest monthly GST collection since the rollout of the unified tax regime in 2017, reflecting steady economic momentum and improved compliance despite global uncertainties.

According to the official data, gross GST revenue for March stood at ₹1,78,000 crore, compared to ₹1,64,500 crore collected in March 2025. After accounting for refunds, the net collection for the month stood at approximately ₹1.51 lakh crore.

Key Highlights:

  • Domestic transactions contributed strongly to the growth.
  • Improved compliance and better tax administration played a key role.
  • Sectors such as auto, consumer durables, and e-commerce showed healthy revenue growth.

Finance Ministry officials described the March numbers as “encouraging”, especially considering the high base of the previous year. The consistent rise in GST collections is being seen as a positive indicator of underlying economic activity in the final quarter of FY26.

With this, the total GST collection for the full financial year 2025-26 is expected to comfortably cross ₹2.1 lakh crore, surpassing the revised estimates.

Economists and tax experts view the strong March numbers as a sign of resilience in domestic consumption and formalisation of the economy.
