US Materials Giant Eyed for Critical Process Chemicals and Contamination-Control Solutions as India Builds Its First Major Semiconductor Ecosystem

Tata Electronics is in exploratory talks with US-based advanced materials company Entegris to secure specialty chemicals and process solutions for its upcoming semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat. The discussions mark another important step in building a reliable supply chain for India’s first large-scale commercial chip fab.

Exploratory Talks with Entegris

People familiar with the matter said Tata Electronics is evaluating Entegris as a potential supplier of high-purity specialty chemicals and advanced process materials required for semiconductor manufacturing. Entegris, headquartered in Billerica, Massachusetts, is a global leader in micro-contamination control, critical materials handling and advanced process solutions used by leading chipmakers worldwide.

Specialty chemicals play a vital role in wafer fabrication, cleaning, etching and other precision processes. Securing reliable partners for these materials is essential for any new fab aiming for high yields and consistent quality.

Dholera Fab: India’s Flagship Semiconductor Project

Tata Electronics is developing a state-of-the-art 300mm semiconductor fabrication facility at Dholera in partnership with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC). The project involves an investment of approximately ₹91,000 crore (around $11 billion) and is designed for a capacity of up to 50,000 wafers per month.

The fab will manufacture chips on process nodes ranging from 28nm to 110nm, targeting applications in automotive, mobile devices, artificial intelligence, power management, display drivers and other segments. Construction is progressing, and the facility is a cornerstone of India’s semiconductor ambitions under the India Semiconductor Mission.

Building a Complete Ecosystem

Semiconductor manufacturing requires a complex web of suppliers covering equipment, gases, chemicals, ultrapure water, waste treatment and logistics. Tata Electronics has been systematically tying up with global technology and materials partners. Earlier collaborations include discussions and agreements with companies such as Merck for materials and chemicals, and others for gases and lithography tools.

Talks with Entegris fit into this broader effort to create a resilient, high-quality supply chain around the Dholera fab. A strong local or near-local ecosystem of materials suppliers is critical not only for day-to-day operations but also for attracting future investments in the region.

Why Specialty Chemicals Matter

Modern chip production uses a wide range of ultra-high-purity chemicals. Even minute levels of contamination can ruin yields. Suppliers like Entegris specialise in materials and delivery systems that maintain purity and process control at advanced technology nodes. For a greenfield fab in India, partnering with established global players helps de-risk the ramp-up phase and ensures adherence to international quality standards.

Strategic Significance

The Dholera project is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs and catalyse a wider semiconductor cluster in Gujarat. Successful partnerships for chemicals, gases and equipment will strengthen India’s position in the global electronics value chain and reduce dependence on imports for critical manufacturing inputs.

Industry observers note that securing multiple materials suppliers also provides flexibility and supply security in a geopolitically sensitive sector.

Challenges and Next Steps

Exploratory talks do not guarantee a final agreement. Commercial terms, technical qualification, logistics arrangements and possible localisation plans will need to be worked out. Tata Electronics is likely to evaluate more than one supplier to ensure competitive pricing and supply resilience.

The company has already demonstrated progress in onboarding technology partners for lithography, process technology and other critical areas. Adding a strong chemicals partner would further complete the ecosystem puzzle.

Outlook

As the Dholera fab moves closer to operational readiness, attention is shifting from construction to the intricate task of qualifying materials, equipment and processes. Discussions with Entegris highlight the detailed groundwork underway to ensure the plant can operate at global standards from the outset.

If successful, the partnership would reinforce India’s emerging semiconductor manufacturing capabilities and signal to other global materials companies that the country is open for long-term collaboration. For Tata Electronics, it represents another building block in the ambitious journey to establish India as a credible player in advanced chip fabrication.
